Discussion:

The poet wrote this piece in January and was shortly thereafter arrested by the secret police after they realized the significance of the beginning word of each sentence.
For the reader’s convenience these beginning words have been highlighted and they read as below:

“Ar Nar Yoo Kyi Hmoo Kyi Than Shwe”

“Ar Nar Yoo Kyi” means “a great power-crazy madman” or a big megalomaniac

“Hmoo Kyi” is a shortened form of Bo Joke Hmoo Gyi (or Kyi), i.e., Senior General

Altogether, it just means, Great Megalomaniac Senior General Than Shwe

In the West, one can write uncomplimentary remarks about their national leaders and none of them take it seriously. Many people accuse George Bush of being power-crazy, but President Bush does not pay attention for obvious reasons. No Western leader in his right mind would bother with frivolous matters.

To arrest and imprison someone for a Valentine Day’s poem just because of such a minor epithet is crazy and speaks ill for a dictator who chooses to exercise his power in such a manner.

Saw Wai wanted to prove a point that Than Shwe is power-mad. To do so, he had to press his hot buttons. What drives a power-crazy man more crazy? Why, any little challenge, the littlest challenge to the power of a power-crazy man will drive him crazy.

He who desires Ar Nar must have Ar Nar, all of it, and woe betide anyone trying to take away even just a little bit of that Ar Nar Power.

Thus, Saw Wai knew that by tweaking Than Shwe where it mattered the most, he knew that the madman would react, OVERreact, and prove his point.

By bravely writing his poem and even braver still, daring to get arrested instead of escaping, he proved beyond doubt that Than Shwe is truly an Ar Nar Yoo.

Let us honor Saw Wai for his courage and ingenuity.

Leaders of the World who speak well of Than Shwe, you have all been warned about who you are dealing with.

Suu Kyi Discusses Sanctions with Diplomats

Suu Kyi Discusses Sanctions with Diplomats
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By SAW YAN NAING Friday, October 9, 2009
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi asked the three Western
diplomats she met in Rangoon on Friday what the aims were of the
economic sanctions their countries imposed on Burma, according to an
NLD spokesman.

The three diplomats were Australia’s charge d’ affaires, Simon Starr,
together with the Britain ambassador, Andrew Heyn, and the US deputy
head of mission. They held talks with Suu Kyi at a state guesthouse
near Suu Kyi’s home for one hour.

The meeting was the first opportunity for a substantive discussion
between Australian officials and Suu Kyi since February 2003, said the
Australian embassy in a statement.

A spokesman for Suu Kyi’s party, the National League for Democracy
(NLD), Nyan Win, said he was briefed by the diplomats in his office on
Friday evening about the meeting.

He said the diplomats said that they had been asked by Suu Kyi to
clarify what the aims of their economic sanctions were.

Suu Kyi also asked the diplomat when and how many sanction did their
governments imposed on Burma and what the consequences of sanction
are, he added.

“She [Suu Kyi] said that she wanted the data belonging to the
sanctions,” Nyan Win

Silenced for Aung San Suu Kyi

Silenced for Aung San Suu Kyi

Here at Causecast, we’ve worked to build awareness about the plight of imprisoned Democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma with the Freedom to Lead Campaign. The campaign has been gaining major media exposure for Shepard Fairy’s iconic image of the imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient and Causecast recently hosted a Flash Mob for Burma. The Causecast online community of activists have also been stepping forward to share their passion for liberating Aung San Suu Kyi and the Burmese people. One Causecast user shared a short video he created documenting the recent protests for Burma outside the United Nations in New York City. Some of you loyal Causecasters may have already read about the demonstration in our interview with Buddhist monk and Burma activist, Maung Maung Tate. The monks and other Burma activists held a silent protest in front of the U.N. Security Council in September to support those who have been silenced by the Burmese military regime.

This video was created by Causecast user and filmmaker Jeffrey Hellman. He stands for justice, peace, and equality. He has been a passionate activist for Burmese freedom; involved with the International Campaign for Freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma, U.S. Campaign for Burma, and World Dharma’s Burma Project U.S.A./Canada, just to name a few. In efforts to raise awareness about Burma’s struggle for human rights and democracy, he expresses himself artistically through poetry, performance, and filmmaking.

In Myanmar, expectations were low for U.N. visit

Reporting from Bangkok — Aging former political prisoner Win Tin says he wasn’t surprised that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s visit to Myanmar to plead for the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi ended in failure.

Ban said Saturday he was “deeply disappointed” that Senior Gen. Than Shwe refused to allow him to see Suu Kyi, adding that she should be released “without delay.” He said Myanmar’s human rights record was a matter of serious concern.
But Win Tin, 80, a former journalist and founding member of Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy, said he didn’t expect a breakthrough.

“I am not being cynical, but I expected nothing much from the visit. Even though he came at the invitation of the regime, it can be seen as the regime’s response to worldwide pressure due to Aung San Suu Kyi’s trial,” he said by telephone Saturday from Myanmar, also known as Burma. “If there is no real political progress, we will see Burma under a military dictatorship for many years.”

Since Win Tin was released in September after 19 years in Yangon’s Insein Prison, he has worn his prison uniform as a sign of defiance. Last month, he was barred from testifying on Suu Kyi’s behalf.

Suu Kyi has been detained for nearly 14 of the last 20 years. She was charged with violating her house arrest after an American swam uninvited to her home and stayed there for two days. The American, John Yettaw of Falcon, Mo., is also being held.

Ban said his two-day visit, which ended Saturday, would be used to call for the release of Myanmar’s estimated 2,100 political prisoners, promote dialogue between the regime and the opposition, and assure a credible vote in general elections scheduled for next year.

Historian Thant Myint-U, grandson of U Thant, secretary-general of the U.N. from 1961-1971, said it was unfair to blame Ban for the trip’s failure.

“Many governments were pushing him to go, the same governments that can’t agree among themselves on what to do about Burma,” he said. “As long as the big powers are deadlocked, it’s easy to push the U.N. secretary-general into the limelight, and then blame him for not producing results.”

Pro-democracy opposition and exile groups were left with the largely ineffectual tools they started with: international outcry and economic sanctions.

“The trouble with sanctions is that they are easy to put into effect and very difficult to get rid of. If you want to achieve an objective, sometimes you have to give people a way out,” said David Steinberg, a Myanmar expert at Georgetown University.

Meanwhile, Win Tin says he is practically homeless. His property was seized by the government when he went to jail on July 4, 1989, and his friends have been denied the government approval needed to house him.

Born into a poor family in north Yangon, also known as Rangoon, Win Tin dreamed of joining Myanmar’s struggle for independence from the British. When he was a teenager, he met Aung San, the nation’s independence hero and father of Aung San Suu Kyi. Win Tin asked if he could join the resistance and was rebuffed.

“Aung San plainly said ‘Stick with your studies. There are many people to fight. The time will come for you,’ ” Win Tin said.

When an uprising broke out in 1988, he became a founding member of NLD and a close aide to Suu Kyi. He was arrested a year later and jailed, and his sentence was extended when he managed to smuggle out a report to a United Nations official about torture and other human-rights violations rampant in Myanmar’s jails.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Win Tin had repeatedly refused to sign a letter promising to give up his political activities as a condition of his release. Local media have reported that Win Tin could be jailed for refusing to return his prison-issue dungarees. He says he will continue to wear the prison blues until Myanmar is free.

“I remember Daw Suu Kyi’s response to this kind of warning about her security. She said, ‘If a quack shoots me with a pistol, then the whole world will know where this bullet comes from,’ ” he said.

Junta seeks regional support: Win Tin

New Delhi (Mizzima) – Veteran journalist Win Tin said on Monday Burma’s military rulers are going the whole hog to garner diplomatic support from regional countries in the face of growing international condemnation over the trial of Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Win Tin, who is also a central executive committee member of the Aung San Suu Kyi led National League for Democracy said, the visit of Sri Lankan President Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa and Singapore’s Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong are all part of the junta’s effort to cosy up to regional countries.

“Clearly, the junta is in a tight spot as the international community has reacted more sharply than it had anticipated. And since it might be difficult for the regime to try and influence the West, they at least want the support of regional countries,” Win Tin added.

On Sunday, the junta’s mouthpiece newspaper reported the visit of Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa to Burma. Rajapaksa was received in Naypyitaw by the Burmese Army Chief Snr. Gen Than Shwe — a rare gesture by the junta supremo.

Similarly, Singapore’s former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on a four-day visit to Burma last week had meetings with Than Shwe and other junta brass.

Win Tin said, such visits are indications that the junta is seeking support from regional countries. He said the junta had not anticipated that there would be such a loud outcry from the international community by putting on trial Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

“It [junta] seems to have miscalculated on the strong support for Aung San Suu Kyi by the international community,” Win Tin said.

The junta wants to gauge China’s reaction over the mounting pressure and is likely to go ahead and sentence the Burmese Nobel Peace Laureate, if China gives the green signal, he said.

According to Win Tin, the junta is determined to sentence Aung San Suu Kyi to a prison term and put her away before their proposed 2010 general elections. But it had not anticipated such an outburst from the international community.

Sources said Thura Shwe Mann, the third leader in the Burmese military hierarchy, last week visited China without making any official announcement. On Monday, the Chinese News Agency Xinhua reported that Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, number two in the military hierarchy, is visiting China.

Observers believe these visits are aimed at explaining and trying to convince China about the junta’s stand regarding the trial of Aung San Suu Kyi and the regime’s plans ahead.

Win Tin said, “Whatever the circumstances, the junta is likely go ahead with its plan if China approves.”

Two Karen villagers raped and killed by soldiers from Burma’s army (LIB (205)

A Karen relief team based on the Thai-Burma border reported on Wednesday, June 17, that two teenaged Karen women were raped and murdered by Burmese soldiers in Kwee Law Plo village, Lu Pleh Township, Pa-an district on June 12.

Joint troops of the Burmese Army and the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) were passing through the village, which is 15 kilometers from Ler Per Her IDP (independent displaced persons) camp.

Speaking to The Irrawaddy on Wednesday, June 17, the Free Burma Ranger (FBR)’s communications and information coordinator said that the two women were raped and murdered in the village after their husbands had fled into the jungle to avoid being forced to work as porters for the Burmese Army.

The source said that the first victim, who was 18 years old, was eight-months pregnant, and the second victim, a 17-year-old, had a six-months-old baby.

The coordinator said the relief team members who are working underground in the area reported that Burmese soldiers from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 205 , which is taking part in the ongoing fighting, were involved in the crime.

The Irrawaddy has not been able to obtain independent confirmation of this incident.

The attack by a joint force of the Burmese Army and the DKBA on the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), which started in the first week of June, has forced about 4,000 refugees to flee to Thailand. Most of the refugees are from Ler Per Her IDP camp, which came under attack.

The FBR is actively involved in helping Karen displaced people inside Karen areas who ran away from the civil war.

On 27 December, 2008, a seven-year-old Karen girl was also raped and murdered by a Burmese soldier from LIB 350 in Nyaunglebin District, Pegu Division.

Different ethnic-rights groups based on the Thai-Burma have written reports about Burmese soldiers raping female victims of the civil war in Burma in previous years.

Karen organizations have previously accused the Burmese military of using systematic rape as a weapon to terrorize ethnic people living along the borders.

In 2004, the Karen Women Organization (KWO) published a report titled “Shattering Silences,” which claimed that Burmese troops systematically raped Karen women. The report documented 125 cases of sexual violence committed between 1988 and 2004.

The report said that half of the rapes were committed by military officers, 40 percent were gang-rapes, and in 28 percent of the cases the women were killed after being raped.

Women’s organizations in other ethnic areas have reported similar incidents. In June 2002, the Shan Women’s Action Network (SWAN) released a report titled “Licence to Rape,” which detailed testimonies from 173 ethnic Shan women who had been raped or encountered sexual violence at the hands of Burmese soldiers.
